Ocasio-Cortez Faces Backlash Over Transgender Awareness Post
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York recently found herself under fire on social media following a post that celebrated Transgender Awareness Week.
Critics, particularly activists concerned about women’s sports, have voiced strong opposition. Notable figures include Jennifer Sey, a former gymnast and co-founder of XX-XY Athletics, and Paula Scanlan, a former swimmer at UPenn and conservative influencer.
Ocasio-Cortez has been particularly criticized for her support of transgender athletes competing in women’s sports scheduled for 2024 and 2025. This conversation intensified in late October when she engaged in a public dispute with conservative activist Riley Gaines.
In a series of posts on X, Ocasio-Cortez derided Gaines, who recently gave birth, with remarks like, “I challenge this guy to get a real job,” and “If I directed all this anger into swimming, I might not have finished in fifth place.”
Earlier this year, Ocasio-Cortez was mocked for a passionate speech on the House floor, where she commented on protections for women and girls in sports. This speech included various inaccuracies and ended with a puzzling statement about CEOs supporting a bill related to California wildfires.
During her address, she touched upon Republicans’ voting records against the Violence Against Women Act and also made questionable assertions regarding abortion rights.
She was among many Democrats who unfoundedly claimed that the legislation would place girls at risk from sex offenders.
Throughout her comments, Ocasio-Cortez implied that the measures could lead to inappropriate examinations for girls wanting to participate in sports. However, the bill does not state that such claims are necessary. This point has been repeatedly raised by her and other Democrats opposing the law.
The discourse has attracted criticism from numerous voters across the political spectrum. For instance, Gary Francione, a law professor at Rutgers University and longtime Democrat, expressed his dissatisfaction and noted that many members of his party feel similarly disconnected from its current direction.
In a previous interview, Francione remarked, “I know several Democrats who are thinking of leaving the party,” highlighting a growing discontent.
A recent New York Times/Ipsos survey revealed that a significant majority of Americans, including many Democrats, believe transgender athletes should not compete in women’s sports. Among the 2,128 respondents, 79% opposed biological males identifying as female participating in women’s events. This included 67% of those identifying as Democrats or leaning Democratic.
