Things took a chaotic turn at City Hall on Friday, led by Councillor Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. As she spoke, members of both sides, often referred to as the “squad,” faced backlash from protesters demanding action against what they called the “Gaza Genocide.”
Ocasio-Cortez, who’s been speculated as a potential presidential candidate in 2028, was addressing constituents in Jackson Heights, Queens, when anti-Israel demonstrators confronted lawmakers from New York’s 14th Congressional District, leading to a scene of disruption.
A woman in the crowd shouted, “I’m a healthcare worker and I want to know what you’re doing about Gaza’s genocide,” as AOC attempted to speak. The tension escalated quickly, with Ocasio-Cortez clearly struggling to regain control.
“I’m a nurse! I’m embarrassed by you!” another attendee yelled from her seat. “You’re a liar! You’re a liar!” The atmosphere intensified, as some spectators voiced counterarguments against pro-Palestinian sentiments while security managed the growing disorder.
“You are a war criminal! War criminal! War criminal!” she shouted as she left the venue, emphasizing her disappointment with Ocasio-Cortez, adding, “I used to support you!”
Once order was somewhat restored, Ocasio-Cortez remarked on the outburst, stating, “I welcome disagreement, especially from those who are upset with me, but we need to maintain certain basic rules here.” She urged attendees to wait for the Q&A session so everyone could engage meaningfully in the discussion.
This town hall didn’t match the earlier enthusiasm AOC had experienced during her national tour with Senator Bernie Sanders. In that campaign, she raised an impressive $9.6 million from over 266,000 individual donors, with an average contribution of just $21.

AOC expressed her gratitude to supporters on social media, saying, “I can’t fully convey how thankful I am to the millions who support us with their time, resources, and energy. Your backing allows us to unite people like never before.”
Nate Silver from FiveThirtyEight has suggested that Ocasio-Cortez is likely to seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028. Vice President JD Vance humorously reacted, calling the prospect of an AOC presidency a “nightmare,” adding, “You ruined my sleep at night.”
