According to Politico, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez plans to bring back the “Green New Deal” terminology in a new housing bill scheduled to be released on Thursday.
Ocasio-Cortez is expected to unveil the Green New Deal for Housing along with Sen. Bernie Sanders (R-Vt.), who is sponsoring the bill in the Senate. He said the bill would primarily focus on public housing, arguing that private housing is no longer a reality for many Americans.
“For a long time, we’ve had tax breaks here and there to say, ‘We have great housing policy,'” Ocasio-Cortez told Politico. “And everyday people… were supportive because they still had the dream and the thought of, ‘I’m going to buy a house soon… It’s in my sights.'” Now we have a whole generation. The bill’s central change is to repeal the Faircloth Amendment, which for decades has prevented the Department of Housing and Urban Development from funding new public housing.
