Ocasio-Cortez’s National Tour Sparks Speculation
WASHINGTON — Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, celebrated among progressives, is actively touring the nation. Engaging with Democratic leaders, she is taking steps typically associated with those eyeing the presidency, all while asserting that the White House isn’t her focus.
As the 2026 midterm primaries approach, Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has been working to support left-leaning Democratic candidates. This strategy is likely to help her when the 2028 election approaches.
In a recent conversation with David Axelrod, a notable strategist from the Obama era, she sidestepped questions about a presidential run. “They think my ambition is status,” she remarked, adding, “My ambition is much bigger than that. It’s about changing this country.” She expressed that while political positions may change, lasting reform, like single-payer health care, is what truly matters.
Last month, she traveled through states including Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Alabama to promote progressive initiatives.
These excursions provided her a chance to refine her messaging and connect with vital voter blocs, which could be beneficial during potential presidential primaries.
She also backed Pennsylvania Rep. Chris Love (D), a self-identified democratic socialist, in his recent Democratic primary where he secured the win.
Ocasio-Cortez made headlines for attending a voting rights rally in Montgomery, Alabama, speaking at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, and providing additional endorsements nationally.
This week, she’s set to visit Montana to support Sam Forstag, a candidate running for Congress.
Last year, Ocasio-Cortez joined Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on his “Fight the Oligarchy” tour, energizing progressives across the country. This has led to discussions about her potential as a successor to Sanders, who is 84 years old. Polling places her fourth among likely Democratic contenders for 2028, trailing behind figures like former Vice President Kamala Harris and California Governor Gavin Newsom.
Earlier this year, speculation around her presidential ambitions waned after a concerning response about potential conflict between China and Taiwan during an event in Munich.
No official announcements have been made regarding candidates for the 2028 election, as individuals typically declare their intentions in the months following midterm elections.
According to a source close to Ocasio-Cortez, her decision will hinge on where she thinks she can have the most significant impact, emphasizing that her plans for 2028 remain uncertain.
Additionally, she is contemplating a potential Senate run against Chuck Schumer in 2028.
