Ocasio-Cortez Endorses Mamdani in NYC Mayoral Race
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the progressive council member representing parts of the Bronx and Queens, is making waves as the Democratic mayoral primary in New York City approaches. With the primary fast approaching on June 24th, she has publicly declared her support for State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani.
In a statement to the New York Times, Ocasio-Cortez praised Mamdani, saying, “He has shown his capability of uniting a strong coalition of working-class New Yorkers to lead this race.” She emphasized the importance of being realistic about the situation as the election nears.
Mamdani has been gaining traction in the polls, now sitting in second place behind former governor Andrew Cuomo. Ocasio-Cortez’s backing is seen as a strategic move to unite progressive voters around a single candidate, particularly in a crowded field, to keep moderate contenders like Cuomo from gaining ground.
Now 35, Ocasio-Cortez made a significant impact in 2018 by defeating a long-standing House Democrat and became a key figure among a group of progressive lawmakers known as the “Squad.” She has continued to draw attention for her bold approach to politics.
Mamdani, a 33-year-old candidate originally from Uganda, is campaigning for policies such as free public transportation and rent control. His platform involves a $10 billion tax increase aimed at wealthier citizens and corporations.
Reflecting on the past election cycle, it’s noteworthy that progressives struggled to rally behind a single candidate in 2021. In contrast, as Mamdani steps up his campaign, Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement comes just days before early voting begins on June 14th.
During a recent debate, Mamdani and his fellow candidates challenged Cuomo, aiming to paint him as out of touch and inexperienced for the current political landscape. Cuomo, hoping for a comeback after his resignation in 2021 over various scandals, is aiming to redeem himself in this race.
