Ocasio-Cortez Changes Stance on Military Aid to Israel
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, representing parts of the Bronx and Queens, has succumbed to considerable pressure from the left and announced that she will no longer endorse military aid to Israel, even for defensive needs.
Previously, Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) had backed measures designed to strengthen Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system. However, she has expressed criticism regarding the transfer of weapons to a key U.S. ally.
“The Israeli government has the capacity to fully fund the Iron Dome system, which plays a vital role in protecting civilians from rocket assaults and bombings,” she stated recently.
“I cannot support Congress allocating more taxpayer money to a government that consistently overlooks both international and U.S. law.”
Her earlier support for defense funding to Israel raised concerns among influential members of the progressive community. A notable instance was her recent social media clash with Anna Kasparian from the Young Turks.
Kasparian criticized Ocasio-Cortez for her previous support of Israel during their exchange.
Ocasio-Cortez also faced criticism from some for not taking a firmer stance against Israel. Last year, she clarified her opposition to funding for the Iron Dome, reasoning that increasing the death toll of innocent individuals in this conflict wouldn’t aid in its resolution.
Her recent shift in perspective is believed to have emerged during a virtual event hosted by the Democratic Socialists of America, a group that is generally quite skeptical about Israel.
This event marked an important milestone in the group’s acknowledgment process.
Her change indicates a growing opposition to Israel among significant segments of the left.
“[Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu’s parliamentary allies have just ratified a $45 billion defense budget, with the prime minister himself signaling a desire to distance from the U.S. military aid arrangement. We will converse with the U.S. in January,” she noted.
“They are fully capable of financing the Iron Dome and other defense mechanisms. Allies seeking our military support must recognize that it’s conditional, in accordance with the Leahy Amendment and the Foreign Assistance Act.”
The Leahy Amendment prevents the U.S. from extending aid to nations facing serious human rights violation accusations, while the Foreign Assistance Act outlines the conditions for international aid.
Ocasio-Cortez, who has generated discussions about a potential run for the presidency or the Senate in 2028, recently faced scrutiny regarding a foreign-policy trip to Germany. During this trip, she participated in a panel at the Munich Security Conference and stumbled on questions related to Taiwan, even suggesting that Venezuela was situated below the Earth’s equator. Many viewed this journey as a window into her foreign policy acumen as she contemplates higher office ambitions.
