Scandal Surrounding Graham Platner and Media Suppression

Graham Platner’s resignation from a significant Senate race in Maine stemmed from a scandal that, according to recent reports, was supported by media efforts to suppress the fallout. Two media outlets allegedly helped shield damaging stories from public view, which ultimately benefited the Democratic side.

An investigation indicated that both Google News and Apple withheld articles that outlined serious allegations against Platner, who was an unsuccessful candidate. Between November 2025 and May 2026, these organizations did not publish any damaging articles that could harm the Democratic campaign, as reported by the Media Research Center (MRC). Some of these stories included troubling content about Platner’s tattoos and controversial posts on Reddit.

The situation escalated when Platner faced sexual assault accusations from an ex-girlfriend, which he denied, but he still chose to halt his campaign. The MRC uncovered that these tech platforms disregarded over 112 articles from conservative news sources highlighting Platner’s missteps.

David Bozell, Chairman of the MRC, commented on the media’s role, stating: “For months, it seemed Platner was the candidate who could challenge Susan Collins. Meanwhile, major news apps dealt with their own controversies, and once the polls changed, the information blackout suddenly lifted. It’s clear that what happened wasn’t a matter of journalistic judgment.” He further emphasized how many smartphone users were kept in the dark only until Platner’s political relevance faded.

Google strongly refuted these claims, calling them “completely false.” A spokesperson criticized the study’s methodology, explaining that it relied on daily checks from a single account without accounting for Google News’s automated updates that cater to user interests.

In response, Bozell defended the findings, arguing that it’s unrealistic for Google to suggest it missed crucial coverage windows simply due to infrequent checks. He called this assertion an insult to consumers’ intelligence.

Apple has yet to respond to requests for comments related to the investigation.

The Democrats are now tasked with finding a replacement for Platner as they aim to reclaim the Senate and challenge incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins. Recent polls indicate a tight race, with Collins neck-and-neck with three identified candidates for the Democratic nomination. Interestingly, two-thirds of those surveyed expressed a desire for Platner to withdraw from the race altogether.
