Apple's top executive admitted that there was a “ugly” delay in the SIRI digital assistant, and that members of the AI team responsible for SNAFU may “feel embarrassing.”
The Cupertino, California-based company reportedly postponed plans to release an AI-equipped version of Siri after encountering bugs and glitches. This adds to concerns that Apple's AI products are lagging behind its big tech rivals.
Robby Walker, head of Apple's Siri team, called the delays and mistakes “ugh” as overhauls, including television commercials, are already undergoing massive public promotions. Bloomberg reportedQuotes an employee with knowledge of what he said.
“This wasn't one of these situations. This allows people to show their plans after it's finished,” Walker said at the All-Hand Conference earlier this month. “We've shown people before.”
While some employees may feel “safe” by the delay, others may “feel” as embarrassing,” he added.
“You might ask a colleague, a friend or a family member what happened, but it doesn't feel good,” Walker said. “It's very reasonable to feel all this.”
Nevertheless, he praised his team members for creating “incredibly impressive” features that ultimately lead to a powerful product.
Walker reportedly said Siri's AI capabilities, which aim to provide customized assistance based on user personal data, are generating a third of the time.
According to Bloomberg, Siri's overhaul, which was targeting this spring's release, is not expected to unfold until next year, according to Bloomberg, which cited people familiar with the situation.
Walker admitted that many of his team's employees are likely to feel burned out, and he realized that the SIRI feature would ship “as soon as they're ready,” the report said.
Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the post.
For now, Apple reportedly doesn't plan to bore the executives who oversee the AI project.
Apple's stock has fallen nearly 13% since the beginning of the year. This is a decline that occurred alongside wider market disruptions that have beaten other big tech stocks. The stock was flat in early trading on Monday.
Cook was called the company's “Apple Intelligence” plan. This was revealed in a presentation choreographed last June last June, as a “game changer” for the business.
Apple's shares rose to an all-time high a few hours after the announcement. This included details about Siri's planned AI overhaul.
This feature is important to Apple's overall strategy, and its future iterations of the iPhone are set to lean heavily towards AI.
The issue began shortly after Apple Intelligence was rolled out last fall, and began to mistakenly spew fake news alerts based on articles written by outlets such as the Washington Post and the BBC.
After intense criticism, Apple vowed to resolve the issue.
