Argentina triumphs over Switzerland in extra time to advance to the World Cup semifinals

Argentina vs. Switzerland: Quarterfinal Highlights

As they approached the quarterfinal match on Saturday night in Kansas City, Argentina and Switzerland had quite different histories in the World Cup. Argentina, spearheaded by Lionel Messi, was aiming for a consecutive title, while Switzerland had reached the quarterfinals for the first time since 1954 after overcoming Colombia in a penalty shootout.

In their earlier match against Egypt, Argentina seemed to shake off their fears. The game showcased an intriguing clash—Argentina’s aggressive attacking style versus Switzerland’s defensive strategy.

Argentina wasted no time establishing their presence. Just ten minutes in, Alexis Mac Allister headed the ball into the net, putting the reigning champions ahead shortly after Messi’s corner kick attempt went awry.

While Argentina held onto some possession, Switzerland also crafted several chances, although Argentina failed to convert on others that looked promising. As the first half ended with only Mac Allister’s goal on the board, Switzerland was perhaps feeling a bit victorious, knowing it’s a challenge to contain the defending champions.

Switzerland maintained the pressure into the second half, with Emiliano Martinez, Argentina’s goalkeeper, making crucial saves. The tide turned in the 67th minute when Dan Ndoye scored for Switzerland, leveling the match at 1-1 and silencing the pro-Argentine crowd.

With the momentum swinging in their direction, Switzerland faced some tough referee decisions. Leandro Paredes of Argentina received a yellow card that was later overturned in favor of Switzerland’s Briel Embolo, who then got his second yellow card and was sent off, leaving Switzerland with ten players.

Despite being down a man, Switzerland held on, thanks in part to a remarkable save from Gregor Kobel at the end of regulation, pushing the game into extra time.

During the first half of extra time, both Thiago Almada and Lautaro Martinez from Argentina saw yellow cards. Switzerland, remarkably, managed to hold the tie despite the numerical disadvantage.

In the 112th minute, Argentina’s Julian Álvarez scored, securing their spot in the semifinals. What a moment. As if that wasn’t enough, Argentina added another goal in stoppage time, extending their lead to 3-1. Interestingly, Messi did not score, breaking his impressive streak that began in the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

The match-up for the semifinals is set. On Tuesday, Spain will face France in Arlington, while Argentina is set to go against England in Atlanta on Wednesday.
