An Arizona couple claims the woman they hired to watch over their dog got drunk and trashed their house while on vacation last month, leaving the dog in a crate for days.
Brooke Gambino and Mohammad Kabiri hired a pet sitter on the app Rover to look after their dogs Goose and Bernardo while they went on a 10-day trip from December 14th to Christmas Day. My only responsibility was to feed the dog. and made sure they didn't run away.
The couple used a sitter to test drive the car a few weeks ago, and it went smoothly.
“Her reviews are great and it looks like she's been on Rover for a few years,” Gambino said. told 3TV/CBS 5.
The first three days passed without incident, but the couple became wary of the sitter after receiving cryptic messages, including random pictures of the dog.
The couple was concerned about the dog's health and asked a friend to stop by their home to make sure everything was okay.
“She stopped by and she said, “Your dog is alive, but your house is a real mess. [the sitter] It looks like she’s on vacation,” Gambino said.
Gambino and Kabiri claim that when they returned from vacation, their home was left in clutter, including dirty duvet covers, stains on wooden tables, e-cig juice containers, and random car keys. .
They told the media that alcohol bottle caps were also lying around, which confirmed their suspicions that the sitter was drunk.
After the horrifying discovery, the couple checked their home's security cameras and it was revealed that a pet sitter had been staying at their home.
“The 17th is the day everything falls apart,” Gambino added.
Ring footage captured the moment two dogs were released and running around near the parking lot, and a voice could be heard yelling, “Come here!”
The dogs reportedly wandered for 30 minutes before returning home after their sitter failed to show up. According to KPNX.
Another video showed a man running out of the house yelling, “Where's my dog?” what did you do? “
The cameras also captured the sitter's visits to the home, some only in the final moments.
“And no one is home with the dog for 23 hours. He's crated for three days in a row,” Gambino said. he told the outlet.
The sitter was also captured having difficulty walking, tripping over bushes and having difficulty standing up.
“Well, if you weren't sober enough to take care of our dog, that's a problem,” Gambino said.
The sitter added that his actions were blamed for the dog having to go to the hospital for a kidney infection, but the dogs were fine.
Gambino said it was painful to see the pets, who have been such an integral part of the home over the past few years, being treated so poorly.
“The dogs have been such a great support to us over the last few difficult years. They are truly special members of our family.”
In a statement shared with AZFamily, Rover said it had suspended the sitter “pending the outcome of the investigation.”
The company also said it would give the couple a full refund and provide other support for them and their dog.
“I think we're all a little shocked more than anything, but we're reassured that the dog is OK,” said the furious couple, who said they planned to stop using the service.
