Suspect Ronald Lee Sivrad, 66, was at large in Arizona, where President Trump was visiting on Thursday.
Sivrad, a Democrat, currently has multiple outstanding arrest warrants, including for drunk driving in Wisconsin and hit-and-run in Arizona, and is also wanted for failing to register as a sex offender.
He was convicted in 2000 of “second-degree sexual assault of a child.”
No details were released about where Sivrud was arrested on Thursday night, but it was made clear he had been trying to take Trump’s life during a visit to the Arizona border.
“The suspect was taken into custody without incident in Cochise County. We appreciate all of the tips we received and the great cooperation with all of our public safety partners,” the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
In the weeks leading up to the Republican’s visit, the 66-year-old made several posts about the Republican former president on his social media platforms, although the exact nature of his threats was somewhat unclear.
Trump reportedly learned about the raids through news outlets. Daily Mail He was answering questions from reporters after a speech at the southern border.
“There’s a manhunt going on in this county and someone has made death threats against you. Did you hear about that before you came?” the reporter asked. “What were your thoughts about coming here? Some people are saying it’s not safe for you to be here.”
“I hear it’s dangerous, but I have a job to do. I hear it’s very dangerous. I haven’t heard about it. Maybe they don’t want me to know,” Trump said. “Thanks for telling me to get out of here right now… No, thanks for telling me, but you can’t.”
“I have a lot of respect for the Secret Service. I have a lot of respect for what they do, including when they jumped on me a month and a half ago with bullets flying all over them. So mistakes are made. They will learn from those mistakes. I have a lot of respect. But I haven’t heard anything like that, but I’m not that surprised. And the reason is, I want to be very bad for the bad guys. So I’ve heard it’s very dangerous to make this trip. Some people really didn’t want me to make the trip.”
This comes nearly six weeks after a failed attempt to assassinate Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when 20-year-old suspect Thomas Matthew Crooks attempted to shoot Trump in the head with an AR-type rifle, but Trump made a timely head movement that only injured him in the ear, and the assailant was quickly eliminated by a Secret Service counter sniper.
