A young Arizona police officer was shot and killed after responding to a call of a “disturbance” early Saturday morning, authorities said.
Gila River Police Department (GRPD) Officer Joshua Breeze died from his injuries on Saturday, the department posted on Facebook. Breeze had been with GRPD for less than a year and was still in field training when he died.
Another officer was wounded in the shooting and taken to a hospital in serious but stable condition, GRPD said. The shooting happened around 2 a.m. at a home in Santa Tan, Gila River Indian Community’s District 4.
“As officers responded to a disturbance involving a large crowd, multiple gunshots were heard,” police said. “Two GRPD officers were shot and four others at the scene were injured.”

“Our hearts and prayers are with these officers, their families and all those affected by this tragic incident,” the statement added.
GRPD is headquartered in Sacaton, the heart of the Gila River Indian Community. Late Saturday, Gila River Indian Community Governor Steven Lo Lewis released a statement following the shooting.
“I believe I speak for our entire community when I say we are deeply saddened by the officers who were killed and injured and all of the local residents caught up in this tragic act of violence,” Lewis said in a statement. “Nothing is more heartbreaking than a life cut short.”
