Arizona Sheriff: significant drug bust involving fentanyl and meth postponed due to protesters misunderstanding it as an ICE raid

Incident in Pinal County Over Drug Bust

A law enforcement operation targeting suspected members of a cartel in Arizona faced unexpected backlash. This situation escalated when someone mistakenly believed that an attack was being carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Pinal County Sheriff Ross Teeple mentioned that investigators had been working for around six months on a case against an undocumented individual who had re-entered the country after being deported. However, he didn’t disclose the identities of any cartel members taken into custody, nor did he clarify any specific charges against them.

During a raid in southwest Tucson on Wednesday, authorities uncovered millions of fentanyl pills, along with cocaine, methamphetamine, and four firearms. There was also some pushback from those present.

“It’s a crazy situation. Some people thought it was an ICE operation and started protesting,” the sheriff stated.

Video footage revealed a sizable group of individuals wearing masks who were attempting to prevent law enforcement from towing the suspect’s vehicle. Teeple described how protesters, carrying signs declaring “announcement of ICE,” actively obstructed the authorities’ efforts to confiscate the suspect’s truck.

“It’s absurd to protest against making the streets safer,” Teeple remarked.

The protesters appeared to misunderstand the nature of the operation, interpreting it as simply an immigration enforcement action. Even when informed that the focus was on apprehending drug traffickers, their willingness to engage in protest remained, highlighting a disconnect in understanding.

“Even after we explained that we were dealing with criminal drug smugglers, they kept on protesting as if they didn’t grasp the seriousness of it,” Teeple remarked.
