Arizona Supreme Court Evacuated Due to Suspicious Package
The Arizona Supreme Court building was evacuated on Monday after a suspicious package was found. Reports indicated that the package tested positive for “homemade explosives.”
Just before 10:30 a.m. local time, court employees discovered a package lacking a return address inside the building. The Phoenix Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) conducted the evacuation. They confirmed their presence at the scene on social media, stating they were investigating a suspicious substance found in the courthouse.
Details regarding when the package was initially delivered remain unclear. An email reportedly sent to the courthouse mailroom revealed that the package had shown positive results for homemade explosives. According to reports, the building will undergo a thorough cleaning, and the items will be removed as part of that process.
Both the courthouse and its adjoining parking area were evacuated and closed, with videos circulating online showing law enforcement activity in downtown Phoenix.
The Daily Caller News Foundation confirmed that the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) is handling the investigation into the package.
It is still unknown how long the closure will last. Staff were instructed to work remotely for the rest of the day.
DPS did not immediately respond to inquiries concerning the incident. This situation may further disrupt the operations of both the Arizona Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals, according to various reports.
