Arizona teachers face allegations of mocking Charlie Kirk's death through costumes

Controversy Surrounds Arizona Teacher’s Halloween Costume

On Saturday, Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Corbett accused a teacher from an Arizona high school of ridiculing the death of Charlie Kirk with a Halloween outfit, while the school district maintained that the costume wasn’t intended as a political statement.

Corbett shared a photo on X, which appeared to feature eight teachers from Cienaga High School, located in Tucson’s Vail School District. They were dressed in white shirts stained with dark red dye and had “Problem Solving” written on them. Concerned parents had sent this image to him.

“Parents shared images of what they thought were teachers mocking Charlie’s murder,” Corbett stated. He added, “They should be well-known for this and should be fired.”

In a subsequent post, Corbett conveyed the district’s official reply from Superintendent John Carruth, who explained that the shirts were part of a math-themed Halloween costume and were not related to any specific events.

“We recognize that some recent social media posts featuring members of the Cienaga math department are causing confusion and concern,” Carruth remarked. He emphasized, “This shirt was meant to be worn while solving math problems.”

Carruth noted that the staff had worn similar shirts in the previous year and expressed regret, saying he would not wear that shirt again. “This is a hard lesson for all of us on being more thoughtful and considerate at this time,” he reflected. He also expressed concern for staff members targeted online due to the misunderstanding, calling such personal attacks unacceptable.

However, Corbett expressed skepticism over the district’s explanation, pointing out that the red dye was only visible on the left side of the shirt, which corresponded with where Kirk was shot while speaking at Utah Valley University on September 10.

“Who’s going to buy this explanation?” Corbett questioned.

As of now, neither Cienaga High School nor Carruth has responded to requests for comment.
