National Guard Deployment in D.C. Aimed at Reducing Violent Crime

Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll has come to the defense of the National Guard’s deployment in Washington, D.C., emphasizing that the troops are genuinely “excited” to aid their community as they tackle violent crime.

In a conversation with reporters, Driscoll lauded the 2,000 National Guard members currently in the capital, asserting that the D.C. Guard is well-equipped for this kind of operation. Despite some critics expressing concerns about the militarization of police, Driscoll has characterized such apprehensions as “flaws.”

“We are the wealthiest country in history, and the reality of our capital reflects a certain lack of standards we sadly also see in many large cities around the world,” Driscoll stated. He mentioned that, based on his discussions with security personnel, there’s a notable enthusiasm about participating in this mission.

The initiative to strengthen security was launched on August 7th as part of a broader effort to counteract crime levels in D.C., which the Trump administration characterized as essential support for local and federal law enforcement. Recently, the Secretary of Defense announced that guards will be permitted to carry weapons during their assignments in the city.

Current Situation of Armed National Guards

While some National Guards are currently armed in Washington, D.C., city leaders believe their presence lessens the pressure on police forces stretched thin. However, uncertainties remain about how extensive the mission will be and the duration of their deployment. Civil rights advocates have raised alarms, warning that such military involvement might set a troubling precedent for future interactions between armed forces and communities.

“Many arguments suggesting a slippery slope here miss the mark; they don’t grasp the value the Secretary of Defense is providing to both D.C. residents and the nation,” Driscoll remarked.

The White House has hinted that security guards from the military might also be sent to other major cities like Chicago and Baltimore soon.

Historical Context of the National Guard

The National Guard has typically been called upon during civil unrest or disasters, but using them for sustained crime control is less common. This ongoing discussion points to the dual responsibilities of National Guards, tasked with managing both domestic crises and national defense.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Biden administration heavily relied on the National Guard, mobilizing troops to maintain order in cities following the Capitol riots on January 6th.

Driscoll has addressed concerns regarding the potential for guards to be deployed abroad. “These soldiers live here; their families are here. They experience the local impact of crime firsthand and take pride in contributing to the safety of our nation’s capital,” he explained.

For him, the mission represents a practical application of military force, stating, “They’re providing daily contributions, making D.C. a safer place for its residents.”
