Charges Filed After Violent Fourth of July Block Party
Six individuals, including four minors, face charges following a chaotic block party in North Charleston, South Carolina, on July 4. This incident reportedly involved gunfire, machine guns, and assaults on police officers, according to local authorities.
The North Charleston Police Department (NCPD) announced the charges against the six, detailing that two of them are adults linked to the unfolding events in the Chicora Cherokee neighborhood.
The charges against the minors include third-degree assault by a mob, assaulting a police officer while resisting arrest, resisting arrest, possession of a machine gun, and breach of peace.
In addition, 19-year-old Giovanni Meki Cynthia Campbell and 18-year-old Samya Adriana Collette Weaver were arrested. Campbell was charged with possessing a machine gun, while Weaver faces charges for assaulting a police officer, breach of peace, and resisting arrest.
Police opted not to disclose the identities of the juveniles involved.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have indicated that further arrests and charges may be forthcoming. The chaotic events began around 8:30 p.m. after officers arrived at the sanctioned neighborhood block party.
Earlier that day, police had met with event organizers to discuss safety measures, particularly concerning traffic and potential emergencies. Reports initially indicated participants were firing fireworks at passing cars, but this escalated to actual gunfire.
Despite attempts to de-escalate and announce the event’s conclusion, tensions flared, leading to multiple fights and more gunshots. Officers were compelled to step out of their patrol vehicles to restore order. During the chaotic response, several firearms—including a machine gun—and a makeshift spear were recovered.
Several officers were attacked, with two female officers sustaining minor injuries. Afterward, law enforcement stated that such attacks on officers are unacceptable and that those responsible will face the law’s full consequences.
A viral video showed one officer being overwhelmed by several people while trying to make an arrest, prompting another officer to intervene with what appeared to be a stun gun. The situation further highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement during such incidents.
No injuries to civilians have been reported thus far. The police expressed gratitude to community members and response agencies for their assistance during the violent altercations.
