Comedians Withdraw from Festival Amid Political Tensions
A number of comedians have suddenly decided to withdraw from a comedy festival featuring Jerry Seinfeld, seemingly as political tensions rise.
Performers who were scheduled to take part in the MEO Commedia a La Carte Fest, also known as the Lisbon International Humour Festival in Portugal, have pulled out, although they didn’t directly criticize Seinfeld.
Actress Inês Aires Pereira announced on Saturday that her show “Namastê” would not be included in the lineup, explaining that “one of the names insistently defends ideas and acts that I consider indefensible.”
She added, “We cannot relativize or normalize a genocide” in her social media post.
Pereira reassured her followers that there would be other chances to see “Namastê,” stating that she plans to return with the show after a season focused on her creative process, just not in this particular context.
The comedy duo “Cebola Mol,” comprised of Eduardo Madeira and Filipe Homem Fonseca, has also canceled their previously planned appearance at the festival.
In their announcement, they expressed a desire to celebrate justice and freedom at another time, without elaborating on their reasons for stepping back.
The duo included an illustration featuring themselves with a watermelon, which represents the colors of the Palestinian flag and has come to symbolize solidarity with Palestine on social media.
Other acts such as “Tributo Pop,” Conjunto Cuca Monga, Pedro Tochas, and visual artist Vhils (Alexandre Farto) have also withdrawn from the event, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
The specific reasons for these cancellations have not been made public.
Scheduled from October 29 to November 1, the Lisbon International Humour Festival is now seeing significant changes to its lineup.
Seinfeld has openly supported Israel during the ongoing conflict with Gaza, where he has confronted hecklers during performances who called for Palestinian support, stating that Palestine “doesn’t exist.”
He was among many celebrities who signed an open letter backing Israel’s actions in the area.
