The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Sunday discovered Hezbollah terrorists hiding in a tunnel surrounded by weapons stockpiles as fellow terrorists retreated north to avoid confronting advancing Israeli forces in direct combat. revealed.
After targeting Hezbollah outposts and weapons depots with artillery and airstrikes, the IDF has encountered surprisingly little resistance as ground forces advance across the border. However, Hezbollah's tunnel infrastructure is significant enough to pose a terrorist threat that can be ambushed and attacked from behind.
The IDF said in a statement:
During a limited, localized and targeted raid based on precise intelligence in the southern region of Lebanon, soldiers discovered an underground tunnel within the building, leading to a terrorist hideout area with an adjacent exit shaft. .
The troops surrounded the building and scanned the tunnel shaft, discovering an underground facility approximately 7 meters deep and a 50 meter hiding area. Hezbollah terrorists were buried there, along with weapons and equipment for long-term stays.
After the terrorist surrendered and was arrested, soldiers interrogated him at the scene and transferred him to a detention facility for further interrogation in Israel.
IDF forces continue to operate in the area.
The Israel Defense Forces released a video showing the terrorist being stripped down to his underwear (to avoid the possibility of wearing explosives under his clothes) and then soldiers coaxing him out of the shaft. They promise not to harm him. The IDF also released photos of terrorists being guarded by IDF soldiers.
The purpose of releasing these materials appears to be to document Hezbollah's use of tunnels near the Israeli border and to send a message to the Arab world, although some of the material is based on Israel's battlefield successes in Lebanon. He remains in denial.
Breitbart News has published a cropped screenshot of the IDF video. Although the Geneva Convention does not directly prohibit the publication of images of prisoners of war, it does prohibit exposing prisoners of war “to humiliation and public curiosity” through such publication. Hezbollah is a terrorist organization that does not abide by the Geneva Conventions, but its provisions apply under so-called “customary” international law.
