Atlantic City casino profits down in 2023, despite online gambling boost

Atlantic City casinos reported lower profits in 2023 than the previous year, despite help from the state’s booming online gambling market.

The nine casinos reported combined gross operating profits of $744.7 million in 2023, down 1.6% from 2022, according to figures released Monday by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. Borgata had the largest operating profit of $226.1 million (up 1.3%), followed by Hard Rock ($125.5 million (down 2%)). Ocean ($117.2 million, up about 22%). Tropicana ($93 million, -15.1%). And only four of the nine casinos had higher profits in 2023 than in 2019, before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic: Borgata, Hard Rock, Ocean, and Tropicana.

The casino also operates under a contract reached in 2022 that gives workers significant raises.

The occupancy rate of the nine casino hotels in 2023 was 73%, down 0.4% from the previous year. Hard Rock had the highest average occupancy at 88.8%, while Golden Nugget had the lowest at 53.8%.

The average price for a casino hotel stay in Atlantic City last year was $180.67. Golden Nugget had the lowest average rate at $123.31, and Ocean had the highest at $270.31.
