Democrats Push to Abolish ICE Following Federal Raid
House Democrats are reigniting their efforts to eliminate Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following a recent raid on Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) home by federal agents. This action was part of an investigation into possible immigration fraud involving the congresswoman, who was born in Somalia.
Just a day after the raid, Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-IL) introduced the Reimagining Safety Act. According to Ramirez, the legislation aims to dismantle the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which includes ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and propose a new entity called the “Department of Community Safety.”
In her statement, Ramirez emphasized that there are countless reasons for dismantling DHS: “Every person dead in detention, shot or killed by ICE and CBP, every neighbor deported, every family that has been separated—these are just a few reasons why we must take action,” she said. She suggests that more than a million reasons exist to support this initiative.
The intention behind the bill is clear: it seeks to stop border enforcement, interior immigration actions, and the detention of migrants. Co-sponsored by Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Adelita Grijalva (D-AZ), and Jim McGovern (D-MA), it aims to shift focus from what Ramirez describes as a “weapon” of a department to one that embodies community values and care during tough times.
Recently, Ramirez and Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) held a press conference advocating for the termination of all immigration detention in the U.S. “We want to abolish ICE,” Ramirez stated firmly. She criticized the profit-driven approach to detention that affects families and communities across the country.
In response, DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin labeled these Democrats as “anti-law enforcement.” He defended the role of DHS, stating, “Our job is to protect the homeland, and that should never be controversial.” Mullin’s comments highlight the ongoing tension between law enforcement priorities and calls for reform from various lawmakers.
