Tragic Shooting of Journalism Student in Philadelphia
A 22-year-old journalism student was shot near his home in Philadelphia after attempting to retrieve his stolen phone. This incident occurred just months before he was set to graduate from Penn State University.
Police dispatch recordings reveal the chaotic aftermath of the shooting on June 6, detailing the recovery of shell casings and a description of the suspect. The alleged shooter reportedly turned and fired before escaping the scene.
Officials from the Philadelphia Police Department have stated that information shared by police radio remains unverified and the investigation into the murder is still ongoing, with no arrests made so far.
Anna Schmidt, the victim’s sister, expressed her grief, stating, “I hope they find these animals and put them in cages for the rest of their lives. I don’t care how old they are. They deserve to spend the rest of their lives in prison for taking my brother away.” She emphasized that the pain caused by this loss is indescribable.
“He didn’t have a weapon. And for the phone? That makes no sense at all,” she added, conveying the senselessness of the situation.
The police audio captures the distressing scene, including an officer’s announcement that someone was shot in the chest, followed by further updates confirming the injuries sustained by the victim.
Officers noted that the suspect was a black male dressed in a light-colored hoodie, black pants, and black sneakers and described him as thin, approximately 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-9, last seen heading west on Deford Street.
Anna also expressed her belief that someone knows the shooter’s identity. “Someone needs to know who did it. Just bring some peace to my family,” she said, further pleading for help in finding her brother’s attacker.
Investigators indicated that the robbery took place around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, after Schmidt had been out with friends watching the NBA Finals.
Surveillance footage appears to show him confronting the suspects, demanding, “give me back my phone,” before pursuing them. Shortly after, gunshots rang out.
Emergency responders found him with a gunshot wound to the chest, and he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Schmidt was due to graduate in December and was a dedicated journalism student at Penn State’s World Campus. His family expressed their sorrow, with the university releasing a statement that mourned his loss and extended condolences.
A reward of $20,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction related to this case.
Bill Schmidt, the victim’s father, located his son’s phone after the shooting and stated he reported it to the police. He mentioned that investigators are working to recover DNA and fingerprint evidence from the device, although it’s unclear whose fingerprints are present.
Describing his son, Bill said, “He loved sports. He sold baseball cards. He was a senior at Penn State.” He added that it was surprising for his son to chase someone, highlighting how gentle and loving Billy was.
The pain from this unjust loss is evident in Anna Schmidt’s words: “I just want him to go home and tell me how much I love him and how much I miss him.” She expressed a longing for her brother to be back home.
In his grief, Bill Schmidt urged city leaders to take action against violence in the community, stating, “They have to clean up the city. Stop the violence. This cannot happen every day.”
The police have reiterated that there have been no arrests thus far and are urging anyone with relevant information to reach out.
