Austerity doesn’t just damage public services, it destroys faith in the future | Torsten Bell

As budget issues settle, it is time to consider the real challenges facing those who seek to govern Britain.

The announced tax cuts will be financed by large upcoming spending cuts. unprotected sector (along with councils and prisons) faces cuts of 13% (£19bn) by 2028-29. Most people have seen the current state of public services and believe it is impossible to deliver them. But let’s focus on why they would also be terrible for our democracy and politics.

Two Resolution Foundation research projects over the past two years have provided real warnings in this regard.of First, involve focus groups. Across Yorkshire from Leeds to Hull, people say that while there is much to love about each place, they see the effects of austerity every day in potholes and neglected town centres. Ta. They knew Congress was facing cuts, but they still took these as a sign that political leaders could not be trusted to get the basics down, let alone make things better.

Last summer we spent two weekends We spoke to the people of Greater Manchester and Birmingham about how these big cities can achieve a more prosperous future. The economics of employment, transportation, and housing were hot topics. But it also became clear that living with a collapsing public service undermined confidence in the nation’s ability to bring about change for the better. This is no small problem. Change requires enabling citizens to imagine a better future and embrace the disruption that will come with getting there.

This warning is consistent with: broader research, examines 166 elections since 1980. They found that austerity measures tend to reduce turnout but increase votes for fringe parties.

What are the challenges facing the UK today? It is important not only to rebuild public services, but also to rebuild the belief that politics can make a difference. Tomorrow may be better than today.
