Austin Reaves becomes the Lakers' main focus in LeBron James' signing.

The Los Angeles Lakers have been straightforward about their long-term goals, especially after bringing Luka Doncic on board. Their strategy is to shape a championship contender around the 27-year-old star, and this plan could significantly influence the futures of both LeBron James and Austin Reeves as free agency approaches.

Lakers insider Jovan Buha reports that the organization views Reeves as a higher priority than James right now.

“When weighing a long-term $40 million a year deal for Austin against a one-year $40 million for LeBron, they might lean towards securing a long-term commitment,” Buha noted. “Austin is a bigger priority than LeBron for the Lakers.”

This makes sense considering Reeves is just 28, aligning well with Doncic’s career trajectory.

Reeves had an impressive season, averaging 23.3 points and 5.5 assists, evolving from an undrafted player to a key asset for the team.

The Lakers have indicated their intentions to keep him. Rob Pelinka, the team’s President of Basketball Operations, mentioned the desire to continue Reeves’ journey in Los Angeles, while Reeves expressed to TMZ that he is eager to re-sign with the Lakers.

That said, the team isn’t overlooking James. They still hope to have the NBA’s all-time top scorer back for another season.

Reeves has often talked about his strong bond with James, stating that it would mean “the world” to keep playing alongside him.

Nonetheless, the Lakers’ focus is clear. Doncic stands as the cornerstone, with Reeves anticipated to be a long-term partner, while James, despite his legendary status, is on a year-to-year basis.

This shift marks a notable change for the Lakers; for the first time in many years, the future may take precedence over the past.
