COLUMBUS, Ohio — Five Arrested in $15 Million Romance Scam

Authorities have taken five suspects into custody for allegedly scamming around 130 mostly elderly individuals they met on dating platforms, raking in more than $15 million. The suspects reportedly flaunted their lavish lifestyles on social media, showcasing their lives in Ghana.

Ohio’s Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel made the announcement regarding the arrests, which is especially noteworthy given the nature of online fraud cases.

All five individuals are facing federal charges, and images from their online profiles are likely to be used as evidence demonstrating how they misused their ill-gotten gains.

Some of the photos shared online show two suspects in matching shirts that say “Business is Business,” posing in front of a red Lamborghini they allegedly secured with the stolen money.

Other shared posts from the co-conspirators displayed a mansion in Ghana, along with luxury jewelry, expensive handbags, multiple high-end vehicles, and even run-down cabins.

Law enforcement noted that the suspects also acquired a Cybertruck, a Mercedes, and a BMW—all of which have been confiscated. Additionally, more suspects are anticipated to be extradited from Ghana.

Victims were led to believe they were in romantic relationships, only to be manipulated into sending money. For example, a 74-year-old man lost $1.1 million after meeting a woman online who claimed she needed financial help to access diamonds she had inherited. After he sent money, she severed all communication.

This operation is part of ongoing efforts by the Trump administration to tackle various forms of fraud, including scams that exploit individuals depending on social safety nets. Vice President J.D. Vance’s team emphasized their commitment to investigating all kinds of fraud, big or small, to protect vulnerable members of society from exploitation.
