Authorities identify victims killed in Georgia high school shooting

Authorities have identified the four victims killed in a student shooting at a Georgia high school on Wednesday morning.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) Director Chris Hosey said two 14-year-old students and two teachers were killed in the shooting.

Hosey identified the two students killed at Apalachee High School as Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14. Hosey said math teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Armey were also killed in the shooting.

According to Channel 2Now, Schermerhorn, who has autism, is believed to have wandered off from school after class.

One of the victim faculty members, Aspinwall, was also the school's football coach.

“Coach Aspinwell was one of the kindest teachers I have ever met. He always said if I ever needed help with anything he was there for me,” one student wrote in a tribute to him on Instagram.

“He was very funny, spoke proudly of his wife and children, and showed all of his students that he cared about them,” the post continued.

On Wednesday, authorities identified Colt Gray, now 14, as the gunman who shot and killed two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School. Gray turned himself in to authorities and was taken into custody after the assault.

An AR-platform weapon was used in the shooting, Hosey said.

“Following our earlier joint statement, the individual identified as the 13-year-old is the same individual in custody in connection with today's shooting at Apalachee High School,” the FBI said.

Investigators are still investigating whether anyone was specifically targeted, but they do not know of any connection between Gray and the victims.

“Within minutes, police were on scene, as were two school resource officers assigned to the school,” Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith told reporters at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

Gray has been charged with murder and will be prosecuted as an adult, Smith said.

Authorities said there is no evidence to suggest another gunman was involved in the shooting and investigators are actively pursuing leads from potential associates of the gunman.

In a joint statement, the FBI's Atlanta field office and the Jackson County Sheriff's Office said the agency's National Threat Countermeasures Center received an anonymous tip about threats being posted online about a possible school shooting in May 2023.

Authorities said the threat included an image of a gun.

Within 24 hours of receiving the anonymous tip, investigators determined the threat originated in Georgia and reported the matter to the sheriff's office.

“The Jackson County Sheriff's Office located a 13-year-old boy who may be the suspect and interviewed him and his father,” the FBI said. “The father stated he had a hunting gun in the home, but the suspect did not have access to the gun unsupervised.”

Authorities said the boy denied making the threats and that they had warned local schools to keep an eye on him.

“At the time, there was no justification for making arrests or taking additional law enforcement action at the local, state or federal level,” the FBI said.

Gray was arrested and is currently being held at the Barrow County Detention Center.

Authorities said three school resource officers were at the school when the shooting began today and were able to make contact with the shooter, who quickly gave up.

The remaining shooting victims are expected to recover, and the Barrow County Sheriff's Office says there are no additional deaths reported at this time.
