Kentucky Church Shooting Investigation
Kentucky police are currently investigating a tragic shooting that occurred at a church on Sunday, which resulted in the deaths of two women.
Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers reported that the unidentified suspect shot and killed two women while injuring two men at the Richmond Road Baptist Church in Lexington.
Authorities indicated that the shooter exchanged gunfire with state troopers after being apprehended near Bluegrass Airport around 11:30 a.m. The suspect was recognized by bystanders, who alerted the troopers to the vehicle’s license plate.
Weathers expressed gratitude towards the individuals who stepped in to assist the troopers during the situation, stating, “I’m really thankful for what they did.”
After the initial shots were fired, the suspect reportedly stole a car about ten miles from the airport before heading towards the church, located approximately 16 miles from the site of the first shooting.
While the motive for the shooting remains unclear, Chief Weathers noted that the shooter may have had prior connections to individuals within the church. “Early reports suggest this might have been the case,” he mentioned.
Authorities have identified the victims as 72-year-old Beverly Gum and 32-year-old Christina Combs.
Governor Andy Beshear also commented on the incident, calling for prayers. He thanked the quick actions of the Lexington Police and Kentucky State Police, emphasizing the need to pray for all those affected by the violence.
