Authorities: Man Who Assaulted Sam Altman Aimed to Stop 'Impending Extinction' of Humanity Due to AI

Charges Filed Against Man in Molotov Cocktail Attack on OpenAI CEO

Prosecutors announced on Monday that a man, accused of throwing a lit Molotov cocktail at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s residence last week, allegedly intended to kill him to avert what he believed was humanity’s “imminent extinction” due to artificial intelligence.

The suspect, Daniel Moreno-Gama, faces attempted murder charges linked to the attack, as confirmed by the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office. Additionally, he is charged federally with attempted damage to property using an explosive device and unlawful possession of a firearm, as stated by the Justice Department.

Matt Cobo, FBI Acting Special Agent in Charge, expressed serious concern regarding the intent and actions surrounding the incident, describing it as a calculated and targeted act against a private individual and a tech company. “This isn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision; it’s a serious matter,” he emphasized during a press conference on Monday.

Following Moreno-Gama’s arrest after the attack on Friday, officers with the San Francisco Police Department uncovered a document detailing his intentions, as noted in a complaint filed in federal court. The document included Moreno-Gama’s aim to kill Altman and articulated his fears about AI leading to human extinction.

According to police reports, the first part of the document, named “Your Last Warning,” included Moreno-Gama’s admission of attempting to harm Altman, alongside the names and addresses of other AI industry leaders. The subsequent section, titled “A little more about the issue of impending extinction,” elaborated on the risks he perceived AI posed. He concluded with a note to Altman, hinting that if he survived, it could be a sign to save himself.

Morenogama launched a “lit Molotov cocktail-style incendiary device” at Altman’s home around 3:37 a.m., which ignited a fire but fortunately did not cause any injuries. The suspect managed to escape the scene.

About an hour later, around 5 a.m., Moreno-Gama attempted to gain entry into OpenAI’s headquarters, where he threw a chair at the glass door and threatened to “burn it down and kill everyone inside.” Police arrived shortly after and arrested him.

An OpenAI representative confirmed the incident, noting that “no one was harmed,” and expressed gratitude for the swift actions of the San Francisco Police Department in ensuring safety within the company.

In a personal blog post, Altman reflected on the attack, admitting he had “underestimated the power of words and stories.” He described the last few years as “intense and chaotic,” urging those in the AI sector to temper their rhetoric.

The FBI’s Director mentioned that operations tied to the attack on Altman’s home were also underway in Texas.

Moreover, Altman’s residence appears to have been targeted again, this time involving gunfire on Sunday, leading to the arrest of two additional individuals.

In a bestselling book, author Winton Hall suggests that AI represents more than just a technology; rather, it embodies a form of political influence. He argues against dismissing AI as just hype or a simple tool, asserting that its designers undermine dissent and manipulate discourse.
