Incident Outside Jacob K. Javits Federal Building

On Monday morning, FBI Director Kash Patel announced that a suspect has been apprehended following the detonation of an incendiary device outside the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building in Manhattan, New York. This incident resulted in a fire.

“This morning an individual deployed an incendiary device outside of 26 Federal Plaza in New York. The individual is in custody and two minor injuries have been reported. The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is looking into the situation,” Patel stated.

The explosion occurred around 8:30 a.m., sounding off between Worth Street and Lafayette Street, which led to the arrival of officials from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the FBI. Videos circulated on social media showed smoke and a small fire in front of the building.

Reports suggest that the suspect brought a cart containing fireworks and airsoft rifles close to the building.

26 Federal Plaza is home to a federal immigration court as well as an ICE field office. Following the explosion, a shelter-in-place order was issued for the building.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed his commitment to ensuring the safety of New Yorkers and holding accountable anyone who poses a threat. In a social media update, he noted, “What occurred outside 26 Federal Plaza this morning was deeply disturbing. I’m relieved no one was seriously injured and that a suspect is in custody. My team is in touch with the NYPD and we will support the federal investigation.”

Authorities have not disclosed the identity of the suspect yet or any motives, although sources suggest the individual may have a history of participating in anti-ICE protests, as reported by Eyewitness News ABC 7.

The New York Fire Department indicated that three civilians experienced minor injuries, one of whom accepted medical treatment and was taken to a nearby hospital, according to the Washington Examiner.
