Small plane hits pickup truck while making an emergency landing on a busy Florida road

A small plane made an emergency landing on a road in North Fort Myers on Saturday, striking the back of a moving pickup truck. The collision was caught on video, but no one was injured.

The aircraft had two pilots on board when a mechanical problem forced them to land near Bayshore Road and Interstate 75 around noon, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said. It had left Sebring at about 11 a.m. and touched down roughly 50 minutes later.

Video shows the plane’s wheels hitting the pavement as it traveled along Bayshore Road. One of its wings clipped the rear of an eastbound pickup.

The sheriff’s office shared images of the plane stopped on the roadway. Sheriff Carmine Marceno said the incident ended safely, adding that recent aviation accidents made the outcome especially welcome.

Marceno credited responding patrol deputies, FDOT Southwest Florida and Bayshore Fire Rescue. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the circumstances of the landing, according to the sheriff’s office.

The incident happened less than a week after a Learjet crashed in Greenacres, in Palm Beach County, killing all nine people aboard. Federal investigators are still working to establish what caused that crash.
