Members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union spoke to CNN about why more of their members are supporting Donald Trump for president.
Earlier this year, the U.A.W. approved President Joe Biden is up for reelection. The unions argued that Biden is the right candidate because he stands with autoworkers and understands the concerns of the working class.
“Are they better off than they were 10 years ago, or worse off? And for many workers, things are getting worse.”
But according to several Michigan UAW members who spoke recently with CNN anchor John King, that’s not true.
Chrysler worker Chris Vitale told King he was rebelling against the UAW’s support for the president and voting for Trump because of an unrealistic Democratic Party and electric vehicle plan.
“The government seems to be appeasing the coasts. They think everyone who lives in Manhattan should drive an electric car,” Vitale said.
“I’ve seen this region go from being the arsenal of democracy to now, where we’re happy with just having a sports stadium and selling wheat and fireworks and things like that,” he said. “It’s really sad that we’ve fallen to this point now, and our politicians are happy about it.” [Trump] It’s not. That’s the difference.”
Former UAW President Bob King told King that autoworkers are supporting Trump because of the economy.
“People feel their government and the system is not living up to their expectations. Are they better off today than they were 10 years ago or worse off? And for many workers, it’s getting worse. Their standard of living is getting worse. In some cases, their communities are getting worse,” King said.
King also spoke with Walter Robinson Jr., a Ford worker who supports Biden and estimates that 40% of his coworkers support Trump because of the economy.
“Gas prices are still pretty high. Every time I go to the grocery store, it costs me $200 every time I go to the grocery store, even though it’s just me and my wife,” Robinson said.
of According to the latest poll Michigan is a close race, with some polls showing Biden leading by a point or two and others showing Trump leading by a point or two.
But what is indisputable is that Biden needs He won reelection by winning the Rust Belt states of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, all of which he won in 2020 on his way to the White House.
But as Michigan voters’ comments show, Biden could easily lose these states because Americans remember the state of the economy under Trump.
