Autopsy shows Colorado QB Dominiq Ponder was intoxicated when he died

Dominic Ponder, the quarterback for Colorado, was found to have a blood alcohol level more than double the legal limit at the time of his tragic car accident last month, according to the Boulder County coroner.

An autopsy report released recently revealed that Ponder’s blood alcohol concentration was 0.167 g/100 mL, significantly higher than Colorado’s legal limit of 0.08. This information was reported by various outlets.

The report indicated that Ponder died from multiple blunt force injuries.

Ponder passed away in a single-vehicle accident in Boulder County on March 1, after losing control of his Tesla while taking a corner at high speed.

The Colorado State Patrol noted that he crashed through a guardrail, hit a utility pole, and then fell down an embankment.

At just 23 years old, his untimely death shocked many.

After the autopsy findings were made public, Ponder’s mother, Katrina Hughes, expressed hope that her son’s story could prevent others from experiencing similar tragedies. She emphasized the importance of making responsible choices and encouraging friends to intervene when someone may not be thinking clearly.

“Children should know they can always come inside, get their keys, call their parents, and speak up,” she stated. “Every little decision could save a life. Don’t hesitate, even if it’s uncomfortable; a tough conversation is nothing compared to losing someone forever.”

Ponder’s passing occurred just prior to the start of the Buffaloes’ spring practice, and the team plans to honor him with a patch on their jerseys for the 2026 season.

Deion Sanders, the head coach at the University of Colorado, mourned Ponder’s death, calling him “one of my favorites.” He remarked on the young man’s respect and leadership qualities, asking others to pray for those who were close to him.

Ponder had participated in two games during his time at Colorado. A GoFundMe initiative has been established in his memory, supporting student-athletes, children’s hospitals, and families in need of medical assistance.
