The wrinkles of time Director Ava Duvernay made an appearance at the Met Gala on Monday, expressing her discontent with President Trump’s proposed tariffs on films made outside the United States, labeling him a “catastrophe.”
When asked about Trump’s tariffs during an interview with Variety, Duvernay stated, “He’s a disaster. That’s all I can say. It’s a catastrophe. Thank you. I might make a movie about it.”
According to Breitbart News, the president suggested implementing “100% tariffs on every film that comes to our country, produced on foreign land.”
He mentioned, “The American film industry is dying very quickly. Other countries provide incentives that draw filmmakers and studios away from the US. Hollywood, and many other areas in the US, are suffering. This is a collaborative effort from other nations, and on top of it all, I’m celebrating 100 years. For all the films that come to our country that were created abroad.”
On Monday, speaking to reporters, the president expressed a desire to “help the industry” and mentioned plans to meet with Hollywood leaders to negotiate.
“I’m not trying to hurt the industry. I want to help the industry,” he claimed. “We’re going to meet with the industry to ensure they are satisfied because we’re all working together.”
Trump remarked that Hollywood had lost its identity as a film business.
“Hollywood doesn’t hold that business much anymore. They have nice signs and everything looks good, but they don’t produce as much,” Trump commented.
White House spokesman Kush Desai noted on Monday that no final decision regarding the tariffs has been made.
“While there hasn’t been a final decision about foreign film tariffs, the administration is considering all options to fulfill President Trump’s aim of safeguarding our national and economic security while revitalizing Hollywood,” Desai stated.
