A Valued Father Dies in Avalanche in California

A tragic incident took the life of a cherished father of three in California this week, prompting his wife to share an emotional tribute online: “My heart will never recover,” as authorities reported.

Chris Thomason, 42, lost his life on January 5th when an avalanche crushed his snowmobile while he was with five friends near Castle Peak, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office.

Despite efforts to rescue him, including being pulled from the snow at around 2:19 p.m. by an off-duty firefighter, it was sadly too late.

“My heart aches every single minute, not just for me and Penny, but for his other two daughters, Emma and Aspen,” his devastated wife, Kelly Kurtz, expressed on Facebook.

“My heart will never recover from this,” she continued. “I love him so much and miss him dearly. I haven’t stopped crying since I learned he was gone. It’s my worst nightmare. He was so deeply loved.”

Thomason, who resided in Bend, Oregon, was remembered by friends as an avid enthusiast of the outdoors, enjoying activities like snowmobiling, boating, and mountain biking.

He was also a co-owner of the Thomasson Auto Group, established by his father, which includes three dealerships.

The Sierra Avalanche Center warned that the avalanche risk remains high, saying, “Yesterday, several people were caught in an avalanche, and one of them was buried and killed.”

They emphasized that the danger is still present, especially on slopes where snow has been blown by the wind, affecting ridges, open slopes, and canyons, even at lower elevations.
