Axing Federal DOE Will Lead to Repeat of Damage from COVID School Closures, We Have ‘Loneliness Crisis’

On Thursday's “MSNBC Prime,” President Randy Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, argued that eliminating the federal Department of Education would lead to situations like the loss of learning we saw during the coronavirus pandemic, saying, “The kids are past kindergarten. Go back?” and “We have a crisis of loneliness.”

After arguing that federal education money is either a tax cut for school vouchers or a block grant, Weingarten said, “And what I fear… If the cuts were made, kids would not have experienced covid – kids won't go through kindergarten multiple times. Crisis.”

She said, “We need to actually expand our high school to career tech preparation and college preparation. How are we going to make these cuts? What is our obligation to young people?”
