New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) recently deployed 750 National Guard troops and 250 additional officers from state law enforcement agencies to help curb crime on New York City’s vast subway system. The presence of soldiers was clearly not enough of a deterrent to prevent a bloody incident on a crowded train in Brooklyn on Thursday.
A fight broke out on a northbound A train in Brooklyn, leaving a man riddled with bullets and a crowd full of commuters cowering in fear, captured on tape.
NYPD Traffic Commissioner Michael Kemper said this at a press conference.
Briefing session Shortly after the 32-year-old man boarded the crowded train at around 4:45 p.m., a 36-year-old man confronted him.
Witnesses said the older man was “aggressive and provocative towards the 32-year-old, who had just arrived”.
Footage of the incident shows a black man wearing a yellow baseball cap, muttering to himself, walking up to a young man and threatening to punch him. At one point, the apparent instigator said, “Are you going to hit the cops?”
Someone off-camera can be heard saying, “He thinks you’re an immigrant. He thinks you’re an immigrant.”
“Your race is shit. Your race is shit. You guys are shit,” the instigator said.
The young man apparently rose to his feet to confront his attacker, and nearby passengers began to push him towards the other side of the train.
“There’s a baby here,” a woman could be heard shouting as the men began circling the pillar, fists raised.
After a brief exchange of blows, the instigator took the advantage and shoved the 32-year-old into a seat.
Earlier, a masked woman standing next to the 32-year-old man appeared to dig into her purse and stab the instigator multiple times in the back.
The instigator looked at the woman and shouted, “Did you stab me?”
“I didn’t do anything,” the masked woman replies.
Bystanders tried to defuse the tension and separate the two combatants, but the instigator, bleeding from the waist, continued to accuse him of stabbing the woman.
“It became physical again and at one point the 36-year-old pulled a firearm from his jacket,” Kemper said. “He then picked up the gun and began walking toward the 32-year-old man who was on the train, approaching him in a threatening manner while yelling. The relationship between the two then became physical again. became.”
During this final physical confrontation, the young man allegedly managed to grab the gun and fire several shots. Kemper said the gun used in the scuffle was “a small semi-automatic, probably a .32 or .25.”
During the scuffle, the train entered the Hoyt-Schermerhorn Street station, where several police officers rushed to the scene after hearing gunshots.
The 36-year-old man was taken to Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in critical condition. The 32-year-old man remained in custody as of Thursday night.
