Jessica McClure Morales Arrested in Texas
Jessica McClure Morales, widely recognized as “Baby Jessica” from her well-publicized rescue in 1987, was arrested on Saturday and faces assault charges following a domestic disturbance at her home in Texas.
According to arrest records, Morales was taken into custody by the Midland County Sheriff’s Office shortly before 10 p.m. After her arrest, she was reportedly released from the Midland County Detention Center on bond.
Details about the nature of the domestic disturbance are scarce at this time. However, officials are expected to release more information as arrest affidavits are processed, which could take up to ten days.
In a remarkable turn of events, Morales, now 40, drew international attention as a child when she fell into a well at her aunt’s house in Midland, Texas, at just 18 months old. This incident led to an intense 58-hour rescue operation that captivated the nation and received global media coverage.
Rescue teams faced significant challenges, having to dig a parallel shaft and a horizontal tunnel to reach her, as traditional methods were ineffective in the rocky terrain. There were even reports of rescuers hearing a child singing, a moment that underscored the hope and tension present during the lengthy operation.
Eventually, paramedic Robert O’Donnell managed to rescue Morales, safely bringing her to the surface and rushing her to a nearby hospital.
Her rescue was met with widespread joy, with cheers echoing through Midland as news of her safety spread. As then-President Ronald Reagan remarked at the time, “Everyone in America became Jessica’s godmother or godfather while this was happening.”
Morales has expressed that she does not remember the incident itself but has undergone several surgeries due to the injuries she sustained while trapped. The dramatic rescue was later depicted in the 1989 television movie Everybody’s Baby: The Rescue of Jessica McClure.
