‘Badly decomposed’ remains of elderly man found in refrigerator chained shut in garage — and police have arrested his son

Police made the horrifying discovery earlier this week after getting a suspicious response during a welfare check in San Antonio, Texas.

Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said The 76-year-old man’s family sought a welfare check after not hearing from him for several months.

“There are several indications that the suspect may have been living in the home with the deceased and cashing checks in the victim’s name.”

When officers responded to the home on Wednesday, a man claiming to be an elderly man told them through his Ring doorbell camera that he was OK, but police became suspicious and asked the elderly man’s family to play the audio.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said the family said the voice on the Ring camera “is not our father.”

The family was able to enter the home and a 48-year-old man came out, who spoke to officers. Officers searched the home and found a refrigerator chained shut in the garage. When they opened it, they found the father’s body, which was “severely decomposed.” KSAT-TV.

Police arrested the elderly man’s son, David Michael Gibson, on Thursday and charged him with tampering with or fabricating physical evidence with intent to injure a human corpse. The San Antonio Express-News reported. It is unclear whether the son killed his father or if the older man died of natural causes.

“The family stated they had not heard from or seen their father in recent months,” Salazar continued. “There is evidence to suggest the suspect may have been living in the home with the body and cashing checks in the victim’s name.”

Gibson faces two to 20 years in prison if convicted of the felony charges. Given $250,000 bond.
