Steve Bannon Discusses Trump’s Prison Reform Impact on Minority Voters

On Thursday, former White House adviser Steve Bannon discussed how President Donald Trump’s prison reform efforts could significantly impact relations with working-class black and Hispanic voters.

Trump enacted the Bipartisan First Step Act in 2018, aiming to reduce sentences for non-violent drug offenders by enhancing the “credits of time earned” for inmates. Bannon, appearing on Matt Gaetz’s podcast, praised the legislation but pointed out that it hasn’t been “enforced” effectively.

“We’ve made progress on prison reform. There’s still a lot to tackle. I’m confident President Trump is committed to this, so it could really matter,” Bannon remarked. He added that it’s politically astute, as these communities feel neglected by Democrats.

CNN commentator Van Jones, who engaged with the White House during Trump’s presidency, highlighted the significance of Trump’s actions. In March, he described Trump as a “huge” development in criminal justice after granting a full pardon to an individual who had spent 22 years in prison for a non-violent drug offense.

Jones emphasized that many incarcerated individuals are aware of the system’s flaws, remarking, “There are many who should be on their way home, but the process is complicated.” He noted that many former prisoners have fought tirelessly for equitable treatment and appreciated Trump for backing the First Step Act in 2019, which mobilized Republican support for justice reform.

Additionally, radio host Charlamagne Tha God noted in May 2024 that Trump’s endorsement of the law might bolster his support among black voters in the upcoming election, stating, “Many have seen their family members come back home.”

Trump is anticipated to make significant gains among both Hispanic and black voters in the November election.
