Barclay Goodrow was caught off guard by his shocking Rangers exit

The Rangers' cap casualty this summer was Barclay Goodrow. The Rangers were forced to put the veteran forward on waivers in order to circumvent the 15-team no-trade list and complete a pre-arranged deal with the Sharks.

It was a necessary move for the Blueshirts, but an unfortunate situation for Goodrow.

President and General Manager Chris Drury waived Goodrow's entire cap hit of $3,641,667.

And Goodrow and Drury still have two seasons left on their contracts, which they signed in July 2021.

But it's clear the two-time Stanley Cup champion wasn't happy with the Rangers' communication leading up to his waiver request.

Goodrow returns to Madison Square Garden on Thursday night, skating on the Sharks' 5-9-3 top line alongside Macklin Celebrini, this year's No. 1 overall pick, and Tyler Toffoli.

“It was just a huge surprise,” Goodrow said from inside the visitors' locker room Thursday morning. “I never had any thoughts of not coming back to the team, and it happened. That was a while ago, but I tried to get over it. We've been here, and with San Jose I’m excited to be here.”
