Bear from the wild comes to Sequoia Park Zoo in California, brings joy to staff members

Bear Visits Sequoia Park Zoo

This week, a young black bear made a gentle, albeit unexpected, appearance at the Sequoia Park Zoo in Eureka, California. The staff couldn’t help but be delighted by his visit.

Zoo officials reported that the bear, around 18 months old, was “extremely well-mannered” during his short stay. This curious newcomer likely ventured out on his own, having wandered from the nearby Sequoia Park forest, a common area for young adventurous bears.

Bears are pretty familiar in the surrounding redwood forest, yet this was the first time one had visited the zoo’s own bear family, according to staff. When he entered the zoo, he sniffed around, exploring the scents of the resident bears while keeping a respectful distance from them.

The encounter turned out to be quite uneventful—there was no aggression from the bear, and he did not trespass into areas occupied by the public.

Eventually, when staff opened a gate to facilitate his exit, the cub found his way back to the forest without any fuss.

The zoo noted that these types of encounters highlight not conflict, but rather the possibility of peaceful coexistence between wild bears and those in captivity. They emphasized the importance of keeping wild bears wild and reminded visitors that sharing spaces with wildlife requires respectful distancing.

Even though the bear’s visit wasn’t caught on video, the zoo did share a couple of photos showcasing this friendly and unusual visitor. It’s a reminder that, generally, black bears tend to avoid humans and can be quite non-aggressive when left to their own devices.
