Bears player responds to the election of Pope Leo XIV during the discussion about Chicago sports fans.

Who is Pope Leo XIV?

The emergence of Pope Leo XIV’s sports affiliations quickly became a topic of interest.

A photograph featuring the new Pope in a pinstriped Chicago White Sox jersey during the 2005 World Series was published in the Chicago Sun-Times.

Cardinal Robert Preble, elected recently, is the first pope hailing from the United States in the history of the Catholic Church. Born in Chicago, he took on the name Leo XIV and graduated from Villanova University in Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in 1977.

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, a rising star in the sports scene, expressed his excitement about the new pope with a simple message: “Daaaaaaapope,” which he shared on social media.

Williams faced a challenging rookie season with the Bears, as the team ended with a 5-12 record. It’s still unclear if the new Pope shares the same enthusiasm for the Bears, but the city has reasons to look forward to the upcoming 2025 season.

In January, the Bears welcomed Ben Johnson as their new head coach. The team made strategic roster changes during the NFL free agency, successfully bolstering its offensive line by acquiring center Drew Dalman while reinforcing protection for players like Joe Sunny and Jonah Jackson.

Meanwhile, the recent papal election aligns with a moment of celebration for Villanova alumni, as several are leading the New York Knicks in their playoff pursuits this season. Photos of the former Villanova players together circulated quickly on social media.

As the Knicks gear up for Game 3 against the defending champion Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semi-finals, it’s worth noting they haven’t claimed an NBA title since 1973.
