Bee Attack in Arizona Claims Life of Worker

On Monday in Arizona, a distressing incident left one man injured, later leading to his death. Nicholas Lopez Soto, 65, along with two colleagues, was engaged in work at the Silverstone Independent Living Facility in Scottsdale when the attack occurred.

Soto and another worker were using a lift to remove stucco from columns near the roof when they were swarmed by bees. Following the attack, the workers brought themselves back down to the ground, but that’s when Soto became unconscious.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, and all three men were transported to the hospital. Unfortunately, Soto was pronounced dead shortly after arriving, while the other two, whose identities remain undisclosed, are reported to be in stable condition. They sustained multiple bee stings, according to police statements.

It’s worth noting that Soto and the other workers had been hired by the facility for this task.

Aaron Lorti, the founder of Az Bee Kings, commented on the situation, highlighting the aggressive behavior of bees in warmer conditions. He noted that bees can become very territorial, and if disturbed, they’ll react defensively. When they sting, they leave a chemical marker that encourages other bees to attack, Lorti explained.

Interestingly, he also speculated that the location of the beehive might have contributed to the severity of the incident. He mentioned that if the building was a one or two-story structure, and an established hive was present, those bees could be particularly dangerous, especially if they were Africanized. These bees, known as “killer bees,” tend to be more reactive to threats, which means even a small disturbance can trigger a severe response.

Africanized honeybees are aggressive hybrids of African and European species, which can result in numerous stings during an attack. While Soto tragically succumbed to his injuries following the attack, the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s office is currently investigating to determine the precise cause of his death.
