Belichick’s Discontent After UNC Loss
Bill Belichick had a succinct explanation for his cool exchange with Wake Forest’s head coach, Jake Dickert, following the University of North Carolina’s 28-12 defeat against the Demon Deacons over the weekend.
This chilly moment came after a tough game where the Tar Heels failed to score a touchdown throughout all four quarters. The match concluded with Robbie Ashford executing a late two-yard touchdown run with just 22 seconds remaining.
In the postgame press conference, Belichick noted, “We didn’t have a good night, and we certainly weren’t good enough here. We’re just going to go back to work this week and see if we can get back on track. We’re a better team than we were tonight, just not very good.”
However, it was the postgame handshake—or the absence of one—that caught the public’s attention. Video footage circulating on social media showed Dickert jogging towards the midfield area. He removed his hat in a gesture of respect while trying to shake Belichick’s hand, but the famed coach appeared to sidestep him and head straight to the locker room.
Onlookers criticized Belichick’s behavior online. One user remarked, “This is a terrible look for Bill Belichick. When you occupy a space like that, you have to be aware of what these games mean to the opposing coach.” Another echoed sentiment with, “Not very sportsmanlike.”
When asked about what transpired during the postgame handshake, Belichick simply replied, “Congratulations.”
North Carolina now faces a critical matchup against Duke University this Saturday, holding a 4-6 record. They need a victory to remain in contention for a bowl game.
