Sen. Bernie Sanders (R-Van.) said Tuesday he's open to the idea of ​​Canada becoming the 51st postwar state. President-elect Donald Trump He suggested to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that the country could join the United States.

“Mr. Trump has proposed that Canada become the 51st state to join the Union,” Sanders wrote. “Does that mean we can implement a Canadian health care system that guarantees health care for all, lowers the cost of prescription drugs, and reduces per capita spending on health care by 50%?”

“I'm all for it,” he added.

Sanders is an ardent supporter of universal health care and a critic of the U.S. health care system and the pharmaceutical industry. He has frequently cited universal healthcare systems that work in other developed countries.

A source told Fox News that someone at the table chimed in and suggested to Trump that Canada would be a very liberal country, sparking more laughter. President Trump has suggested Canada could become two states, one conservative and one liberal.
