Bernie Sanders supports Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner despite controversies

Sens. Bernie Sanders from Idaho and Vermont is facing criticism from Republicans for endorsing progressive oyster farmer Graham Platner for the Democratic nomination in Maine. This backlash comes after concerns about Platner’s past social media comments and notable tattoos.

Paul Dame, the chairman of the Vermont Republican Party, urged Sanders to reconsider his support for Platner or clarify his stance. This sentiment was echoed by Jessica Mackler, president of Emily’s List, who labeled Platner’s remarks as “unacceptable and disqualifying,” as reported.

Platner’s Reddit posts have drawn scrutiny, with some containing slurs against individuals with special needs. He also referred to himself as a “communist” and criticized police officers, using harsh language to describe them.

In another exchange, he suggested that white individuals in rural areas are inherently “racist” and “stupid.”

Recent reports highlighted a tattoo on Platner’s chest resembling a Nazi skull and bones emblem, which he has stated he intends to have removed.

“He has experienced some dark times. He isn’t alone in that,” Sanders commented, defending his support. He expressed confidence that Platner would conduct a strong campaign.

Sanders is backing Platner against Maine Governor Janet Mills, who is endorsed by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Notably, Sanders referred to Platner as “a great working-class candidate.” Platner has claimed that his previous Reddit comments were meant to “uplift people,” insisting they don’t reflect his current views.

He explained the adoption of the skull and bones tattoo occurred during a night of drinking with Marines in Croatia, saying, “If I had known, I definitely wouldn’t have lived with this on my chest. It’s offensive to suggest otherwise. Removal is already in my plans.”

Platner also highlighted that nothing of this nature has transpired since then, mentioning that he enlisted in the Army, which included stringent background checks for hate symbols, to later join a security detail for the ambassador in Afghanistan.
