Criticism by Treasury Secretary on State Tax Breaks
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expressing strong disapproval of several Democratic-led states for not embracing President Trump’s significant tax reforms, known as the “one big beautiful bill” (OBBB). This sweeping legislation aims to provide considerable tax relief.
Bessent pointed out that states like Colorado, New York, Illinois, and the District of Columbia are “deliberately denying their residents” access to the tax breaks specified under this law. He labeled this as “a blatant act of political obstruction,” asserting that it directly undermines the families and workers whom liberal politicians claim to support.
He argued, “By denying residents access to these important tax breaks, these governors and legislators are forcing hard-working Americans to pay higher state taxes, depriving them of the relief they deserve and exacerbating the financial strain on low- and moderate-income families.”
The tax bill, which was signed into law on July 4, has been characterized by Bessent as “the most pro-worker, pro-family tax reform in a generation.” He emphasized its benefits, such as “tip-free” tax exemptions for service workers, “tax-free overtime,” and new tax credits for seniors reliant on Social Security.
Bessent stated that the President’s vision is unambiguous: to provide real relief for hardworking Americans, assurance for businesses, and to stimulate growth.
He urged any remaining holdout states to act swiftly, stop the political stalling, and not continue to punish their citizens with what he described as “partisan games.” According to him, “Americans voted for bold change, not bureaucratic hurdles.”
Bessent also mentioned that the Treasury is prepared to collaborate with any country that is dedicated to fulfilling its commitments, but they cannot allow obstructionism to hinder the nation’s recovery.
He concluded, “This means putting America first, starting with the families and workers who make our economy the envy of the world.”
