Iran’s Oil Trade and Economic Pressure
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent discussed the state of Iran’s oil trade, predicting that in roughly two weeks, the Islamic Republic may find itself without any trading power. During an appearance on a recent Fox News segment, he emphasized that Iran is rapidly diminishing its trade capabilities.
Bessent stated, “I am confident, given that there’s only 15 million more barrels of Iranian oil on the water, that Iran will have nothing left to trade for anything.”
He elaborated that Iranian support from China is waning, a situation exacerbated by the ongoing U.S. economic offensive against Iran. Bessent expressed his belief that Iran is experiencing pressure, hence their desire for a deal.
“Probably within the next two weeks, they are going to make their final deliveries of oil to China, and then they will have nothing,” he noted. “It is an empty seat, and I believe that they are feeling the pressure here, and that’s why they want a deal.”
In last month’s implementation of “Operation Economic Outcast,” the U.S. initiated a strategic economic campaign aimed at severely restricting Iran’s financial capabilities and isolating it from global markets. By enforcing secondary sanctions and blocking Iranian ports, significant economic pressure has been applied to Iran, even amidst a relative calm in hostilities.
Bessent tweeted, “Operation Economic Outcast has caused the rial to hit record lows. We will continue to degrade the Iranian regime’s ability to fund terrorism and develop a nuclear weapon.”
Iran has threatened to disrupt commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, claiming authority over the vital waterway. Meanwhile, U.S. naval forces have been aiding vessels transiting the area, while simultaneously limiting Iranian oil shipments.
Bessent mentioned, “We’re averaging now 15 to 22 million barrels a day. It was about 20 pre-conflict, so you take out the one and a half or two Iranian barrels.” He concluded by saying, “The score is: United States one billion — more than one billion barrels have gotten out — Iran zero.”
