President Joe Biden appeared to struggle to get his point across cogently during a news conference with Kenyan President William Ruto on Thursday, raising concerns about his fitness to serve as president.
The awkward press conference was the latest in a series of public events where Biden has struggled to speak gaffe-free. Biden’s aides corrected nine gaffes in a recording of the speech he delivered on Sunday.

Biden has implemented a new strategy of walking to and from Marine One with multiple aides to “draw less attention” to his physical ailments, Axios’ Hans Nichols and Alex Thompson reported in April. Biden has also started boarding Air Force One using a short flight of stairs at the back of the plane rather than the taller ones at the front. Biden has opted out of wearing traditional dress shoes with his suit; instead, he wears athletic shoes specially made to help with walking, a typical clothing change for older adults.
Polls show Americans have doubts about Biden’s leadership skills.
- A recent Harvard-Harris poll found that about a third of Democrats doubt Biden’s mental health.
- Another poll found that 82 percent of Americans are concerned about Mr. Bidem’s mental and physical health.
- Only about a third of voters say Biden is physically and mentally fit to serve a second term, according to a Quinnipiac University poll.
