President Joe Biden's U.S. Trade Representative, Katherine Tai, announced an increase in tariffs on China originally imposed by former President Donald Trump. The tariff hikes come as Vice President Kamala Harris denounces the use of tariffs during her presidential campaign.
“The tariff increases finalized today target the harmful policies and practices of the People's Republic of China that continue to impact American workers and businesses,” Tai said in a statement.
These actions underscore the Biden-Harris Administration's commitment to defend American workers and businesses in the face of unfair trade practices.
Among the customs duties Increase Tariffs on imports from China are 100% on electric vehicles (EVs), 25% on non-lithium-ion battery parts and lithium-ion batteries, 50% on semiconductors, 50% on solar cells, and 25% on steel and aluminum products.
Tai wrote that tariffs on China are important because they help reduce “U.S. imports of goods from China.” [People’s Republic of China] And increasing[ed] It could facilitate imports from alternative sources, including U.S. allies and partners, supporting the diversification and resilience of U.S. supply chains.”
President Trump has said for years that the US must raise tariffs on China, particularly on Chinese-made cars, including electric vehicles, to prevent “bloodshed” on American autoworkers.
Conversely, Ms. Harris has attacked the use of tariffs, arguing that they amount to a “national sales tax” on Americans, despite the lack of evidence that tariffs increase consumer prices. Ms. Harris has also used the anti-tariff talking points of the nation's leading free trade groups.
Harris' opposition to tariffs aligns with the interests of her Wall Street donors.
